What does the Schengen deal mean for your arrival?

Let's start with the basics. Gibraltar is now included in the Schengen free travel area. This means that people and goods can move freely into Spain and the wider area without border checks.

This agreement does not include services, such as food delivery or taxis.

As such, the 90-day limit every 180 days rule now includes Gibraltar.

Arriving at the port:

If you are arriving via a cruise ship, there is no change to the process or requirements to enter Gibraltar, so long as your cruise has previously called at another port within the Schengen Area. If it has not, you may be escorted to the airport for entry checks.

If you are arriving on your own vessel, you may be subject to the same escort process once docked. Please consult the port authority for more information.

At the airport:

All arrivals into the Joshua Hassan Gibraltar International Airport will require a passport, even if arriving from other Schengen airports.

Persons arriving from outside Schengen who are not EU or Gibraltar residents may need to carry out registration for EES and ETIAS.

Non-Schengen flights will be subject to passport checks from both Gibraltar and EU officials. Schengen arrivals will only be subject to checks from Gibraltar officials.

At the frontier:

What frontier? There are now no passport checks at the frontier, although you should always have a valid form of international ID on you when crossing.

Taxis, City Busses and other service vehicles (such as delivery bikes) are not able to cross the border.

You may need to change to the local bus/taxi service. Currently, the frontier rank is the closest place to do so, although construction of a shared transport hub is planned.
