Moorish Castle stands as Gibraltar's most ancient fortification. The Tower of Homage, dominates the Gibraltar skyline standing at over 30 meters tall representing the pinnacle of medieval defensive design and engineering prowess.
The Moorish Castle was established in 711 CE by Tariq ibn Ziyad, a Berber commander. The name "Gibraltar" derives from "Jabal Tariq" (Mountain of Tariq), commemorating this pivotal moment in history.
The Moorish Castle survived the Reconquista and subsequent Spanish rule, adapting to new military technologies while maintaining its strategic importance. It was infact Gibraltars prison until the 2010s.
Recent archaeological excavations continue to reveal new insights into the daily life and defensive capabilities of this remarkable fortress as the castle grounds are currently being refurbished for an improved visitor experience.
