The Barbary macaques in Gibraltar are believed to have been present on the Rock since the 18th century.

The macaques are believed to have been brought over to Gibraltar from North Africa by the Moors or the British as pets, before realising they were untameable and setting them free on the rock.
The macaque population now stands at around 200 individuals between 6 troops, but it hasn't always been this healthy; In-fact during the Second World War, Churchill ordered more macaques to be brought over after fears that there weren't many left. This was especially significant, as the legend goes that Gibraltar will forever be British as long as the macaques remain.

As a reminder to those visiting them during their time on the rock, they are wild animals and should not be fed or provoked. Please also do not leave bags open or out of sight, as they will steal items from them.
