General Sikorski Memorial

South district (Europa Point)

20-25 min

A monument dedicated to General Wladyslaw Sikorski, the first Prime Minister and the first Commander in Chief of the Polish army in exile in 1939-1943, who died in a plane crash taking off from Gibraltar in 1943.

The aircraft, a B-24 Liberator (American-built), climbed normally from the runway, levelled off to gather speed, but then suddenly lost height and crashed into the harbour. Of the 17 people on board, including Sikorski's 31 year old daughter, only the pilot survived.

The crash is considered to be an accident, but many conspiracy theories suggest that it was not the case.

The monument first opened at the east end of the runway in 1945 but was relocated to Europa Point in 2013.
