O'Haras Battery

Upper rock nature reserve

20 min

O'Hara's Battery is a fascinating blend of military engineering, stunning architecture, and strategic importance.

At an elevation of over 425 meters (1,400 feet) theres no better vantage point over the Strait of Gibraltar, the African coastline, and the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

The battery was constructed alongside its sister battery, Lord Airey's Battery in the early 1890s. Both named after former Gibraltarian goveners. The battery was in use up to and including World War II and was last fired during training exercises in 1976.

Both are located near Lord Airey's Shelter, still MOD property, now thought to have been built as a cover for Operation Tracer's Stay Behind Cave.
