Pillars Of Hercules
Upper rock nature reserve
20 min
According to Roman mythology, Hercules was the god of strength and verility. It was he who they thought separated the continents of Europe and Africa through his separation of two mountains, Mons Abila in Morocco and Mons Calpe (Calpious), now known as Gibraltar (British Overseas Territory).
These mountains formed the Pillars of Hercules.
Today, the monument and viewing platform at the southern side of the Rock, next to the main entrance to the nature reserve overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar, one of the world's busiest shipping channels, the Spanish coastline along the bay of Gibraltar, and 32km in the distance on a clear day, the mountains of Morocco.
