Europa Point refers to the area arround the southern most tip of Gibraltar, providing some of the most spectacular views in the Mediterranean, with Africa visible across the narrow Strait of Gibraltar on a clear day. The last time the strait opened up was around five million years ago, when Europe seperated from Africa.
The area is the home of the Gibraltar Trinity Lighthouse, in addition to the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe (Gibraltars patron saint) and The Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque, a gift from Saudi Arabia. The lighthouse is now fully automated and the only one regulated by Trinity House outside mainland United Kingdom, dating back to 1841.
The areas unique microclimate supports specialized plant communities, including several endemic species found nowhere else in the world, such as the Gibraltar Sea Lavender (Limonium emarginatum). Due to Gibraltars position on bird migratory routes the area also serves as a vital stopover point for migratory birds traveling between the continents.
